Bored To Death: The Complete Second Season

There's nothing quite like HBO's half hour comedy, "Bored To Death." While the network has garnered attention for flashier, mass-appeal comedies like "Entourage" and "How To Make It In America," this series, which stars Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifinakis and Ted Danson, is the series that should be receiving more accolades.

As the second season kicks off (on the eve of this week's third season premiere), amateur detective Ames (Schwartzman) has finished his novel and decides to become a creative writing teacher while still taking on the occasional crime case with the inept help of his buddy Ray (Galifinakis) and eccentric boss George (Danson, never better).

While some shows rely on the mystery of the week to drive an episode, "Bored To Death" uses whatever mystery the guys are trying to solve as a way for them to bumble over things and make things worse before they make them better. And while Ames, Ray and George may not be likely heroes, you'll find yourself rooting for them as they mess things up repeatedly but somehow manage to solve the mysteries at hand.

Besides the hilarious writing of the series, much of the credit must go to Schwartzman, Galifinakis and Danson. The threesome take the material handed to them and somehow elevate it to a much higher level. Bravo!

Great extras for the second season DVD includes in-depth behind-the-scenes look into Ames quirky world, deleted scenes, outtakes, Inside The Episode segments as well as audio commentaries featuring Schwartzman, Danson, creator Jonathan Ames, director Michael Lehmann and director/consulting producer Alan Taylor.
