If Your Erection Lasts More Than Four Hours...

A truck driver from Newark, Del., filed a medical malpratcie lawsuit after getting a three-part penile implant from his urologist in 2009, which allegedly gave the driver an eight-month erection, the Wilmington News Journal reports.

About three years ago, Daniel Metzgar, 44, began having a problem with the implant from urologist Thomas J. Desperito. A number of physical activities, including riding his motorcycle, dancing, dressing, using the bathroom, and even getting the morning newspaper, became a problem and embarrassing. According to Metzgar and his attorney, Michael C. Heyden, the truck driver also ended up with less size and sensitivity because of scar tissue.

The penile implant consists of inflatable cylinders inside the shaft of the penis, a fluid reservoir under the abdominal wall and a pump inside the scrotum, the newspaper notes. Metzgar apparently underwent the procedure after erectile dysfunction medications failed to help him.

The case played out in a New Castle County Superior Court in Delaware on Monday where Desperito's lawyers argued that bad medical results sometimes occur but no one is at fault. They said Metzgar should have realized something was wrong after the surgery when his scrotum swelled to the size of a volleyball.

The truck driver, however, says he thought the swelling was normal but the urologist's attorney, Colleen D. Shields, said that Desperito told Metzgar, four months after the initial surgery, that the prosthesis had to be removed after the patient complained of an infection and that the erection was not subsiding.

But Metzgar allegedly did not take action for following that visit. Metzgar lost his health insurance after the procedure in December 2009 and said he did not have the $10,000 the urologist wanted before the surgery.

"Metzgar ended up getting the prosthesis removed in August 2010, after tubing from the device punctured his scrotum during a family trip to Niagara Falls," the News-Journal writes.

A similar incident occurred in May 2012, when Henry Wolf of California, filed a lawsuit against BMW North America and seat maker Corbin-Pacific and claimed that he experienced a non-stop erection that lasted 20-months after he rode his 1993 BWM motorcycle for four hours.
