A nude man was found dead Sunday, sitting on a toilet in the bathroom of a 24-hour bathhouse for gay and bisexual men in New York City, according to police.
The New York Daily News reports police found a 45-year-old man around 2:35 a.m. inside the East Side Club bathhouse. A police source said that narcotics were found on the man and that he apparently died of an overdose.
The identity of the man has not been confirmed as his alleged family in the Philippines are currently being notified.
As the Daily News notes, the club calls itself "New York's premier social relaxation club for gay and bisexual men" and that the members-only club's NSFW site offers a "midnight express" coupon for $10 rooms from midnight until 8 a.m. on weekdays. The club, which is located on E. 56th Street and has apparently been running since 1976, also offers premier rooms for $36 with a $10 per-hour overcharge.
The newspaper says that the club's front desk worker, Dexter Edwards, says the man did not die of an overdose and that he died of a heart attack.
"It's not a sex club," Edwards told the Daily News. "It's a social club for men. We have steam rooms, saunas and showers."
He added that the club doesn't get complaints and that "We are quiet. We do everything within the law."
Julius Weil, 57, who lives near the East Side Club, spoke with the Daily News and said that the club is next door to a public elementary school and not far from a high school.
