Grimm - Season Three

Either I'm getting older or am out of the loop with network television standards, but the violence in the "Grimm" TV series seems to have increased in "Grimm: Season Three," a 5-disc and 22-episode set out on Blu-ray. Look no further than episode four (titled "One Night Stand") in this third season of the twist on the Grimm fairytales: 2 men are drowned, a girl gets punched and thrown about, and yet another character has his head hit by a baseball bat. For all the violence the viewer has to endure, these episodes of "Grimm" are still as watchable as prior seasons.

"Grimm: Season Three" wisely eschews the Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) amnesia storyline and instead focuses on the new super-abilities of Nick (David Giuntoli), who can now suddenly die and come back from the dead. Partner Hank (Russell Hornsby) gets to come along for the ride again. And Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) consummate their relationship and move in together.

All the characters on "Grimm" are now in on the joke of Nick's Grimm heritage, inevitably taking away the mystery the show once had. But the writing has definitely gotten stronger and the continuity of the show remains one of its strong points.

Like previous season's Blu-ray releases, "Grimm: Season Three" comes in an attractive packaging with a handful of bonus features. Once again there is the "Grimm Guide," an interactive look at the mythical beasts featured in the show. Deleted scenes adorn each disc for their companion episodes and a reliable gag reel entertains once again. Two brief behind-the-scenes featurettes are enjoyable enough, but the short stories featuring Monroe and Rosalee, entitled "Love Is in the Air," surpass the charm of "Grimm" itself.
