LGBT Activists Rally in Brooklyn After Attack on Trans Woman
EDGE READ TIME: 1 MIN.
A rally was held in Brooklyn Tuesday night in response to the attack on a transgender woman by a group of men Sunday night.
According to DNAinfo, the victim, 28, was walking down Bushwick Avenue Friday night with a friend around 11:20 p.m. when they were allegedly accosted by a group of four men who yelled anti-gay comments at them. One of the men threw a Plexiglass board, striking the victim in the head and knocking her to the sidewalk. The men then fled the scene.
Police say that a good Samaritan flagged down a police car and the woman was brought to nearby Elmhurst Hospital.
The New York Police Department's Hate Crimes unit is investigating the incident.
"I'm just overwhelmed because this young woman came to New York from Utah to make a life for herself in a community where she would be safe as a transgender person, and she came all this way only to find violence instead of safety," one person at Tuesday's rally told NY1.
Those who knew the victim say she moved to New York City in the hopes of finding a community and escaping anti-trans violence.
"It's like a sister falling aside because of somebody that wants to hate and wants to bash on our community," another person told NY1.
