Michael Sam, the first openly gay football player in North America, was named one of GQ's men (and woman!) of the yeark, it was revealed Monday.

As Today.com points out, each year the men's lifestyle magazine names a handful of celebrities who've had a big year impact on pop culture. Besides the National Football League's first out player, "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Chris Pratt, comedian Dave Chappelle, "The Fault in Our Stars" actors Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley and Steve Carrell, who stars in the drama "Foxcatcher," will also grace the covers of GQ this month.

You can pick up a copy of Sam's cover when the issue hits shelves on Nov. 25.

Earlier this year, Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, after playing college football for the Missouri Tigers football team at the University of Missouri, but was later released.

In September, Sam was put on the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys and last month, the team waived the 24-year-old athlete from their practice squad, making him a free agent.

Sam made headlines after he came out as gay just before the NFL draft this year. A number of NFL officials anonymously came forward and said Sam's coming out would hurt his chances at being drafted. He was eventually drafted by the Rams in the fourth round and he was once again thrown into the media spotlight after he shared a kiss with his boyfriend after hearing the news.

Conservatives, This text will be the linkincluding Donald Trump, criticized CNN for airing the kiss heard around the world.
