Girls - The Complete Third Season

It's easy to get distracted by the self-involved chatter, insanely narcissistic characers, and Lena's Dunhams. However, "Girls" is proving to be an insanely well-written series. The third season, available on Blu-ray showcases how unique Dunham's writing is and how the show does have legs besides its initial shock value.

The Blu-ray/Digital Copy comes with some pretty great bonus features. It's rare for deleted scenes to be epic, but this season there is a lot of major scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor. Insight into Jessa's (Jemima Kirke) storyline, more Marnie (Allison Williams) inadvertently alienating people around her, and even some scandalous scenes. There's also the obligatory recycled HBO "Inside the Episodes" that air after the show. However, it can be enlightening to see Dunham describe her characters. There's also the commentary and gag reel.

A mildly amusing, yet somewhat incongruous feature, is "Lutheran Healthcare Honors Lena." Dunham worked with a non-profit for mental health and they honored her. The "Girls" cast filmed a comedic sequence that poked fun at her narcissism. It was amusing and a nice bonus for fans of the show. There's also the new addition of musical sequences featuring Williams singing both for the fictional viral video where she covers Edie Brickell's "What I Am" and with her singing partner in "Bet on Me." There's also a song by Lil Frexxx called "Dancing on his D."

"Girls" has really found its voice. If you didn't get it when it first came out you can enjoy this third season complete with more evolved characters and a clearer message. If you still don't get it Dunham will be on hand to explain it to you. And yet, her characters have become endearing and more realistic given how realistic their Millenial entitlement is.
