'Praise the Lord' Pizzeria Temporarily Closes After Refusing to Serve Gay Weddings

A pizzeria in Indiana has temporarily closed shop after its owners made headlines and were ridiculed on social media Wednesday for publicly announcing they would serve gay people, but not cater gay weddings (lol), TMZ reports

One of the owners of Memories Pizza, located in Walkerton, Ind., Crystal O'Connor, told local media this week that the state's newly passed Religious Freedom Restoration Act allowed her to deny service to same-sex couples who may want pizza at their weddings.

"If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say, 'no,'" she said. "We're not discriminating against anyone, that's just our belief and anyone has the right to believe in anything."

O'Connor, who backs Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's decision to sign the controversial bill into law last week, doesn't believe that it will lead to discrimination despite saying that she'll use it for just that purpose.

"I do not think it's targeting gays. I don't think it's discrimination. It's supposed to help people that have a religious belief," she said.

But not long after her comments, which were ridiculed across the Internet, it was reported that Memories Pizza has shut down - for now.

According to TMZ, the pizzeria was also flooded by phone calls, sparking owner Kevin O'Connor to temporarily go dark until the "threatening" phone calls and social media posts stop.

He echoed Crystal O'Connor's sentiments to TMZ, saying he would never refuse a gay person pizza but since he doesn't support same-sex marriage for religious reasons, he would not service a same-sex wedding.
