Chicago Radio Host Suggests Seahawks' QB Russell Wilson Might be Gay
EDGE null READ TIME: 2 MIN.
An outspoken Chicago sports radio host is making headlines Wednesday after suggesting Tuesday that the Seattle Seahawks' quarterback Russell Wilson might be gay, saying he doesn't "have to live a lie," according to Yahoo Sports.
Dan Bernstein's comments, which were made on WSCR 670 The Score's "Bores & Bernstein" show, come after Wilson said Sunday that he and his girlfriend, R&B singer Ciara, were abstaining from sex until they get married. He said that God told him to "guide" Ciara and his remarks reportedly went viral on social media.
A listener of Bernstein's radio show texted him a question about Wilson's remarks about his relationship with Ciara. Bernstein started to talk about the athlete's first marriage, which he suggested ended because of his ex-wife's unproven "dalliances" with other football players. The radio host went on to say:
"If you start to piece this all together, I think you come away with a pretty easy-to-reach conclusion here. The whole thing. Don't you? Don't you just wish he could feel comfortable enough to be a little more truthful with all of it?"
"Is it that difficult?" co-host Terry Boers asked.
"Sadly, it still is," Bernstein replied.
"I would just say, 'Russell, it's OK. It's OK,'" Bernstein said.
Though Boers seemed to miss what Bernstein was alluding to, Bernstein continued.
"I don't think you're quite getting what I am getting at. Put the pieces together," he said. "The whole Russell Wilson thing - all of the artifice here. Everything that's going on. All the strangeness. All of the stuff with the first wife, and the discomfort there ... and this isn't a new pattern.
"And I understand there were times past where you felt you had to live a lie. This isn't that time," Bernstein added. "This is quite the opposite of that; you don't have to live a lie. You don't have to be artificial."
Though Bernstein never explicitly said Wilson is gay, he concluded:
"My point is this: With every day that goes by, we live in a world that is much more understanding and much more supportive and would just say, 'OK, that's cool and get on with the football.' I don't think this one is too tough. Based on the evidence presented. Do you have enough for Tom Cruise?"
As Yahoo Sports writes, Bernstein's sports talk show has "an edge" with listeners calling in to disagree with him and Boers. Nevertheless, the show apparently brings in good ratings.
Yahoo Sports also points out Bernstein never says Wilson is gay in the entire radio show, adding: "At no point does he even say that Wilson being gay would be a bad thing. In fact, he goes out of his way to suggest that Wilson's sexuality would be no big deal if that was indeed to be true."
The episode of the show, called "Russell Wilson is Weird - Boers and Bernstein Hour 4," has been uploaded and the question starts around the 23-minute mark, Yahoo Sports points out. You can listen to it by clicking here.
