'RuPaul's Drag Race': Robbie Turner

Scott Holland READ TIME: 3 MIN.

In Week 6 of Season 8, the mini-challenge was one of my all-time favorites, as the library was open for "Reading is Fundamental." All the queens stepped up for this challenge, but in the end the winner was Bob the Drag Queen.

The maxi-challenge called for the "gurls" to strut down the yellow brick road in original drag couture and they were each given a character from "The Wizard of Oz." The real challenge was to make over a partner as if they looked alike; their partners came from the cast of "Little Women L.A."

In the end the winner of this week's challenge was Naomi Smalls for her "cowardly lion" looks. The bottom two were Derrick Barry and Robbie Turner, and Derrick had a better lip sync so she stayed and Robbie Turner sashayed away.

At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?

I think I was 20, and I fell into it; a friend of mine needed a drag queen hostess. We were taught to go by boy names and I didn't want to go by my legal name, because I hate it. I am a big fan of the book "Atonement," and there is a character in their named Robbie Turner, and the rest is history.

How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you were chosen?

This was my fourth audition, and when I received the call, I thought they were just going to ask more questions. Right before they told me I was chosen, I had just had the largest iced tea and I almost peed my pants. I was so excited.

Is there an additional pressure considering you are from the same city as Jinkx and Ben?

There was a little bit of pressure, but not from myself, but rather from everyone who kept mentioning it to me. Event though the three of us seem similar, we are quite different. Being the fourth Seattle queen on the show, and [knowing] two did really well, I wanted to make sure I made a good impression.

Tell me about your "RuPaul's Drag Race" experience.

RuPaul is great. She is actually so much calmer than you think. It's hard when you mess up in front of her, because sometimes you can't fix it quickly enough. The experience wasn't the most ideal, but I love the girls. Also, I had Debbie Harry sing "Happy Birthday" to me so there were some really good times!

Who do you want to win?

I am such big fans of Kim and Naomi so I would like to see a double win. I would also like to see Thorgy win something as she has been in the top the entire time, but has never won anything.

Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.

I lost my virginity on a church white water river rafting trip.

What's ahead for Robbie?

I'm currently working on my Hard Rock Caf show, which is a throwback to the '60s variety show, featuring live singing, dancing, comedy sketches, and a cast of six. It plays April 29 through May 1 at the Hard Rock in Seattle, with the idea of taking it on tour. I am also on tour performing all over the United States.
