10 Out of 12
Drew Jackson READ TIME: 2 MIN.
"10 Out of 12," the latest Undermain Theatre production that opened November 12, explores the unusual process of a theater company's technical rehearsal. "10 Out of 12" is fascinating and brilliantly directed and acted. Simply stated, I loved it.
"10 Out of 12" refers to the number of hours scheduled for a technical rehearsal; a twelve-hour day with two one-hour breaks.
A technical rehearsal, commonly referred to as "Tech," is the rehearsal when the director brings the actors (who have been already been in rehearsals separately) together with the costume designer, sound designer and light designer. The director reins all these variables into a (hopefully) cohesive production that is audience-ready.
"10 Out of 12" has no linear plot. In fact, the play within the "10 Out of 12" play is rehearsed out of order. Instead Undermain's production is an immersive experience into watching a piece of art created. As a bonus, every theater patron is given a headset as they enter the theater. The headset allows the theater patrons to eavesdrop on the techies and the stage manager who provides cues to the techies and to the light and sound designers.
All of the above provides the audience with multiple layers to enjoy "10 Out of 12." You can use the headsets to listen to all the backstage technical elements. At the same time you can watch the on-stage actors act while also following all the director and technical cues.
Anyone who has ever been involved in any theater production is going to enjoy all the familiar aspects of tech night. And those of you who have never been involved in theater productions will be both entertained and fascinated by the way "10 Out of 12" allows you to peek behind the curtain to see how a production comes together.
Undermain's "10 Out of 12" features a tight excellent cast. Highlights of the cast include Thomas Ward, (the director) Danielle Pickard, (the stage manager) Juliana Dellasanta (the light designer) and Mitchell Stephens (the assistant director.)
Perhaps the most memorable character in "10 Out of 12" is Paul T. Taylor as the star of the play within the play. Taylor is super and hilarious as the diva actor whose breakdown of his acting process tries the patience of the entire company of the play.
"10 Out of 12" Director Blake Hackler manages to keep this Jenga-like play from tumbling over. Other technical team members include Steve Woods, (lighting) Preston Gray (sound) and Diggle (scenic design.)
"10 Out of 12" is smart, informative and entertaining immersive theater. Anne Washburn's play gives you an exciting feeling like an intruder or a voyeur into a nearly miraculous process. The play is a unique one-of-a-kind experience that is a must see for serious theater aficionados.
"10 Out of 12" runs through December 3 at the Undermain Theatre, 3200 Main Street, in Deep Ellum, in Dallas. For information or tickets, call 214-747-5515 or visit www.undermain.org
