National LGBTQ Task Force Commemorates World AIDS Day 2016

Today is World AIDS Day. This year's theme is "Leadership. Commitment. Impact." And The National LGBTQ Task Force is joining lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) and HIV/AIDS advocates in commemorating World AIDS Day.

"HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects LGBTQ people, our families, and our communities. Today our advocacy leadership and commitment is focused on those most impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic: people of color, people who inject drugs, transgender people who lack access to trans-inclusive health care, people who engage in sex work, and people in the criminal justice system. We do live at a time when an AIDS free world is possible. Now we have to work even harder to make it a reality," said Rea Carey, Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force.

Specifically, the Task Force's work includes:

  • Helping incarcerated people and formerly incarcerated people with HIV/AIDS access healthcare.

  • Ensuring that people have access to a full range of methods of STI (sexually transmitted infections) prevention, including PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), through culturally competent and trauma-informed healthcare services.

  • Developing policy recommendations to improve conditions for sex workers, including ending use of condoms as evidence, ensuring access to social services, and decriminalizing sex work.

  • Leading the way on ensuring federal funding for syringe services programs serve LGBTQ people.

    The National LGBTQ Task Force works to secure full freedom, justice and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people. For over forty years, we have been at the forefront of the social justice movement by training thousands of organizers and advocating for change at the federal, state, and local level.
