Watch: Sherry Vine Takes on Trump with Revamp of Billy Joel's 'We Didn't Start The Fire'
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
In her latest music parody, drag icon Sherry Vine takes aim at Donald Trump and the entire right wing establishment to the tune of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire." Following in the footsteps of Joel's original, Vine makes brief, rapid-fire allusions to many of the major events that shaped this past year including the Orlando nightclub massacre, Russia's tampering with the election and Trump's anti-LGBTQ administration.
"This is a very different kind of parody for me," admits Sherry Vine from her Manhattan home. "While most of my parodies tend to be funny and naughty, there's an element of anger and cynicism in this latest.
"It reflects how many of us in the LGBTQ community feel today," she continues. "We don't know what the future has in store for us. At any moment, the other shoe may drop and we're scared. Very scared."
Sherry Vine's "We Didn't Start the Fire" was conceived by Josh Rosenzweig, Karl Beck and Sherry Vine. It was written by Vine and its video was directed by Rosenzweig. In addition to current events, the full video deals with LGBTQ history (good and bad), AIDS, homophobia, bashing, the "gay agenda," and the religious right.
gaySVTVworld launched almost one year ago, on Valentine's Day, 2016. Billed as a one-stop, digital destination for all of the world's LGBTQ entertainment needs, the network kicked off its first season with a slate of eight programs -- including "Sherry and the Greek" and "The Anita & Gina Marie Show" -- that released daily. From the start, the intention was to roll out new programs, music videos and comedy sketches every few months.
Now in its second season, the network has introduced some of the web's boldest programming including Trade2Trade, featuring interviews with go-go boys, male burlesque performers and porn stars. The network has also released many hilarious new video parodies including a duet of the Arianna Grande/Nicki Minaj song "Side To Side."
A long time fixture in the New York City bar scene, Sherry Vine became a national sensation on YouTube with her hilarious music video parodies. She has appeared on the off-Broadway stage, in numerous films including "Stonewall" and "Wigstock" and has starred in two seasons of Here TV's variety show, "She's Living For This."
Josh Rosenzweig served as SVP of Here TV for ten years where he produced over two hundred hours of television programming including "She's Living For This" and "Heart of Broadway: An Inside Look at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS." He was also the host of the hit TV talk show "Just Josh." Rosenzweig has directed many music videos, award-winning films and over forty productions for the theater. He has been nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards.
