A transgender woman of color, who was also as drag performer, was shot dead Saturday night outside a shopping center in New Orleans, The Times-Picayune reports.
A relative identified the victim as Chyna Doll Dupree, according to the newspaper.
Police said they Dupree dead on the scene around 8:30 p.m. and that she was shot several times. Witnesses said they heard between eight and 10 gunshots.
A woman who did not want to be identified told The Times-Picayune Dupree was her niece and a trans woman. She also said she was a drag performer from New Orleans and toured across the country.
"A very loving person," the woman told the newspaper. "She didn't do nothing to nobody."
Dupree's Facebook account listed her name as Chyna Gibson, The Times-Picayune points out, adding the Orleans Parish coroner identified her as China Gibson.
A friend of the victim, who also asked not to be named, told the newspaper Dupree recently arrived from California to celebrate Mardi Gras with friends and family.
"She was just a really good person," the friend said. "Everyone loved her. This is unnecessary."
Dupree's homicide comes just days after it was reported a Chicago transgender of color named Keke Collier was shot and killed earlier this month. Dupree's death marks the fifth reported killing of a trans woman in 2017, New Now Next notes.
