Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Thirteenth Season

Michael Cox READ TIME: 2 MIN.

"Stuff doesn't happen to you. You happen to stuff," Dr. Bailey declares as she is taken into a maximum-security prison. An inmate has complications in her pregnancy; three surgeons must attend. It's a routine operation, but the inmate is severely violent, locked up for 20 years to life and doesn't like being touched.

This is just a drop in the bucket of "stuff" that happens to the surgeons of Grey Sloan Memorial, but they keep plugging through -- as they have for thirteen seasons of "Grey's Anatomy" -- with humor, tears and a whole lot of hope.

This season focuses on the core characters that have been with the show from the beginning, Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and our narrator, Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). And it often examines the tenuous relationship between grief, sorrow, anger and violence.

Picking up right where Season Twelve ended, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen's (Kevin McKidd) have just been married, a wedding which is just about to implode. Alex has brutally beaten DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) for a crime he didn't commit. And Riggs (Martin Henderson) is turning up the heat on Meredith. But she can't let it get too steamy, because she knows her sister Maggie (Kelly McCreary) is going to get burned.

Meredith slips a little with Riggs -- in a car, no less -- and it sends her on a trajectory that may leave her alone. Especially after Alex goes to trial. He could go free, or he could go to prison for eight to 10 years. But it looks like he may take a plea bargain. He'll lose his license to practice medicine and everything he's built -- and he'll still have to spend two years in prison -- but this choice could save his girlfriend Jo's (Camilla Luddington) secret identity.

Meanwhile, Webber realizes that Bailey has demoted him - and taking his place is one of the most obnoxious, overblown and narcissistic surgeons Grey Sloan has ever seen, Dr. Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk). The whole hospital is in an uproar; they hate their new leader. There just one problem -- for Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) at least -- Minnick is also kind of hot. And Arizona can't decide whether to boot her or bed her.

As civil war breaks out in the OR, April (Sarah Drew) steps in as interim Head of General Surgery, putting fuel on the fire. And Jackson (Jesse Williams) reunites with his long lost father, only to discover that his father was happier without him. Although the news is devastating, it may bring him closer to the mother of his new baby.

All 24 episodes of this highly addictive show are now on DVD, including deleted scenes and bloopers.
