Real Men Wear Pink of Boston Kicks of 2017 Season with Brewery Tasting
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
On Thursday, September 14, Real Men Wear Pink of Boston will hold their 2017 Mixer at the Harpoon Brewery Tasting Room. The event will feature a speech by Charlie Baker, Governor of Massachusetts, as well as attendance by some of Boston's most prominent men who will be revealed publicly for the first time as the 2017 Real Men Wear Pink candidates, taking a stand against breast cancer.
Candidates will contribute their unique talents and reach deep into their networks during September and October focused both on collecting donations for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Boston walk as well raising awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research, provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk, and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most so that no one facing breast cancer ever has to walk alone.
Each Real Men Wear Pink of Boston candidate is challenged with a fundraising goal of $2,500, and, they are asked to wear at least one pink item, every day in October, all month long! They are encouraged to have fun and to spread the word about breast cancer awareness both in live events in their professional and personal life settings and via social media.
In 2016, the inaugural Real Men Wear Pink of Boston campaign more than tripled its goal to bring in more than $174,000. It was one of the top campaigns of its kind in the country last year. Out of 2,825 Real Men Wear Pink candidates in the country last year, seven Boston men were in the top 100.
This year the American Cancer Society is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events, which were founded in Boston, Mass., and Concord, N.H. Since 1993, more than 13 million walkers in the U.S. have helped collect more than $810 million in donations to help save lives from breast cancer.
At Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks, communities embrace a bittersweet mix of purpose -- celebrating survivorship, paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, and having collective determination to fight for a world without breast cancer. Events are noncompetitive, three- to five-mile walks. Participants walk in teams or individually and invite friends and families to join their team and donate to their efforts. Volunteers help with check-in, water stations, information and more.
Boston's 2016 walk saw nearly 30,000 walkers who raised $2 million. Nationally last year more than 1.4 million Making Strides Against Breast Cancer participants raised more than $60 million.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. with complimentary tasting of Harpoon's famous beers and hors d'oeuvres, and at 7:30 p.m., there will be a presentation with brief remarks from a breast cancer survivor and a caregiver.
The Real Men Wear Pink event will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 14 at Harpoon Brewery Tasting Room, 306 Northern Ave., Boston.
