Noah Cyrus: At 17 & Opening for Katy Perry

READ TIME: 3 MIN.

Noah Cyrus began her show business career at the age of 2 (in 2002) on the television show "Doc." At nine she appeared in both the film version of "Hannah Montana" and on multiple episodes of the television series. Also that year she gave voice to the title character in the English-language version of the animated film "Ponyo."

But it is as a singer that the 17-year-old is currently making her mark. Little wonder: her father is Billy Ray Cyrus and her older sister is Miley Cyrus. In 2016 she signed a record deal with Barry Weiss' record label, called RECORDS, and had an immediate first hit "Make Me (Cry)" featuring British singer Labrinth. She's got a new album on the horizon, "NC-17," and will perform cuts from the LP when she opens for Katy Perry on that singer's current national tour.

Despite her celebrity pedigree, Noah has taken a low-key approach to her music career. In a profile on the Fader, the music website writes:

"Noah has spent the first few months of her fledgling singing career making secretly weird pop songs and performing them in stripped-down settings. By presenting a mostly unpolished version of herself to the world, she's proven she can really sing, and amassed a small army of fans to call her own. Everyone would like to think if they had all the available tools to become a famous artist, they'd be themselves; rooting for Noah is easy because she appears to be doing just that."

EDGE caught up with Noah for a quick interview earlier this week.

A cool thing

EDGE: What has it been like touring with Katy Perry?

Noah Cyrus: Touring with Katy Perry has been so fun and such a huge opportunity that I'm forever grateful for. Being able to perform in front of thousands of people has been so incredible especially as a new artist. It has to be one of the coolest things I've been able to do so far.

EDGE: Why did you name your new album "NC-17?"

Noah Cyrus: I named it "NC-17" because we were at sushi with some people at my label and I didn't have an idea of what my music was going to be like, I had just started writing. Ron Perry, the president of SONGS, out of nowhere, blurted out "what about NC-17" and we were like, "woah that's great" and we were like "woohoo.".

EDGE: How are you handling celebrity?

Noah Cyrus: I don't consider myself a celebrity. I don't like that word, but being recognized for my art will always be the most incredible feeling in the world.

EDGE: What is "NC-17" shaping up to sound like?

Noah Cyrus: So far, my singles haven't shown so much about the album. The singles are so different from one another. They are going to be on the darker side because that's me. I like to call it emo pop. I like to show the real me and that dark feel definitely captures who I am. Then, again, I can be completely wrong and that just feels dark to me but not to anyone else.

EDGE: Who are you influenced by?

Noah Cyrus: Ben Howard

EDGE: Will you be performing any new music in your set?

Noah Cyrus: I perform my new single "Again" each night!

EDGE: Are there any collaborators on the new CD?

Noah Cyrus: You're going to have to wait and see. Time will tell.

EDGE: Who are the dream producer you want to work with?

Noah Cyrus: Kanye

EDGE: Is there any acting in your future?

Noah Cyrus: Who knows. If they can get me in "American Horror Story," then sure.

EDGE: And are you able to have a private life?

Noah Cyrus: Yikes
