LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care to Host Continuing Education Symposium on Transgender Care

READ TIME: 1 MIN.

On Saturday, October 28, the LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care will lead a continuing education event for health care providers on the emerging field of transgender health, the first time such training has been offered in Maryland.

The training event is presented by The LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Medical providers will hear from experts in LGBT care about best practices when caring for transgender and gender non-conforming patients.

"It can be very hard for transgender individuals to find a health care provider who understands their needs, and has been trained in gender transition," said Dr. Elyse Pine, a pediatric endocrinologist at Chase Brexton Health Care who specializes in transgender youth care. "We want to help our fellow clinicians learn the essentials of providing compassionate and comprehensive services to these patients, and expand the number of trained, welcoming health care providers available to the community."

Scheduled sessions will address issues of stigma; the local landscape of the transgender population in Baltimore and Maryland; and the best practices for medical care regarding adolescent care, transgender hormone care, older adult care, and surgical options for gender affirmation. Attendees will also hear from a panel of transgender patients about their experiences.

The symposium on Transgender Care through the Lifespan will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Chase Brexton Health Care's Mt. Vernon Center, 1111 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
