Watch: Randy Rainbow Croons Over 'The Don' in Impeachy New Parody Video
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 4 MIN.
The impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump just wouldn't be a milestone in he saga of the current presidency without a musical video from political parody commentator Randy Rainbow. Cue up Rainbow's latest: "That Don!"
Sung to the tune of "Gaston," a song from the 2017 live-action Disney musical film "Beauty and the Beast" - a song that mocks a vaingloriously puffed-up local hero - the song features all the signature Randy Rainbow flourishes.
Starting out as Rainbow's videos usually do - in the form of a faux interview, supposedly from an imaginary fake news broadcast that's recognizably a spoof on real-life "opinion news" source Fox and Friends - "That Don!" sees Rainbow introducing Trump as "the newly impeached, and may I also add - I know you don't like to tweet your own horn - third-ever in history to be formally charged with high crimes and misdemeanors President of the United States... at least, at the time this interview was recorded."
Trump, in footage taken from a real inetrview, appears to nod along to Ranbow's introductory comments.
"congratulations," Rainbow adds, in a sing-song voice.
"Thank you very much, that's really nice," Trump responds.
Rainbow then takes note of Trump coming "under scrutiny recently for your seeming hasty order to order a strike" that killed Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian general.
"We came in with very powerful force," Trump boasts, "bit ut was imminent, and then he was gone."
The comments seem to reference claims from the Trump administration that Soleimani had been preparing to launch some sort of attack against the
United States - a claim that has been met with skepticism from some quarters.
Rainbow then notes that some of the president's critic, "like Adam Schiff, are accusing you of weaponizing foreign policy for the sake of your own campaign" ;in an election year."
Trump responds with a favorite phrase: "It's a hoax."
"Nevertheless, with all of this negate publicity, you're really going to have to sell yourself this time," Rainbow notes, before going o to launch into the song while Trump begins a harangue against the impeachment proceedings against him.
"Gurl, what's this new medication you're one? Chill out, you're about to turn blue," Rainbow croons, his lyrics seemingly reflecting recent comments Trump tweeted about teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg after Thunberg was named TIME Magazine's Person of the Year for 2019.
"Blustering just like a Mafia don," Rainbow continues, "it's radical even for you."
Adds Rainbow: "Your rants are erratic, absurd, and inane, and while that's completely on-brand, it's time you start selling your brand-new campaign. Fine," the comedian adds, in a spoken aside. "Let me give you a hand."
With that, Rainbow imitates Nancy Pelosi's now-famous mocking applause for the president, which she delivered after Trump's State of the union address last February.
The song then launches into a rhyming checklist of the president's falsehoods, outrages, and missteps.
"Who's as dim as the Don"? Who's as grim as the Don? Who assassinates dudes on a whim in Iran?" Rainbow chirps brightly. "No, his strategies couldn't;t be stranger when handling foreign affairs; we might all be in imminent danger, but as long as he get reelected, who cares?"
The trick-phtoography chorus of multiple Rainbows joins in for the next verse:
"Who can schmooze like the Don? Hates fake news like the Don? When they charge individuals, who's #1? And goes what: Now he's running in 2020!" Rainbow reveals a T-shirt with an IMPEACH TRUMP bumper sticker across the front, then rips the sticker off to reveal a standard TRUMP logo. "Go out and vote for the Don!" Rainbow and his chorus of multiple selves adds, as the camera pans across a row of Rainbows whipping up signs that spell out D - O - N... and then finally - T.
The next verse reads like the bullet points of a pro-Trump harangue:
"His crimes are fine, the laws are jokes, his lies are all true and the truth is a hoax!"
"It's a disgrace," Trump interjects at that point.
"Who distracts like the Don?" Rainbow and his chorus then wonder, dressed now in Eastern European peasant shirts. "Doges tax like the Don?"
"Who makes up batshirt crazy-ass facts like the Don?" a besuited Rainbow wonders.
"No, there's no one who's caused as much chaos," the chorus returns, now dressed in Victorian female garb.
"Or broken the laws that he's breached," observes the suit-wearing Rainbow.
Trump seems to nod in acknowledgement.
"At the drop of a hat he'll betray us," Rainbow adds. "And that's probably why his at ass got impeached," the crooner goes on in a mutter.
"Who can cheat like the Don?" the song then asks of the thrice-married, and allegedly philandering, president. "Who can eat like the Don?" the song then inquires, seemingly in a riff on Trump's reputed fondness for unhealthy fast food. "Who might start World War II with a tweet like the Don?"
A still image of the president with his cell phone now appears to vaporize in an atomic blast.
"So if you've lost your mind or you hate your children" - two theories as to why Trump supporters stand so fervently by their man, despite three years of his raucous and scandal-ridden presidency - "vote for the Don. Yes, that Don!"
"In 2016 he relied on his daddy in Russia to help him pull through," Rainbow then notes, as the imagery shifts to a photo of Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin. The lyrics and imagery conjure a wealth of associations, from Trump's famed invitation while on the campaign trail for Russia's help in digging up dirt on then-rival Hillary Clinton, to Trump's well-documented admiration for, and obsession with, strong men like Putin, Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, among others.
'But this time he vows it's America first," Rainbow adds, "and that's why he's relying on youuuu...kraine."
The jab is a reminder of the purported quid pro quo demand in which Trump apparently offered to release promised aid money to the struggling Eastern European democracy - which is vulnerable to further encroachments by Russia - in exchange for that nation's opening of an investigation into Trump's current political rival Joe Biden and Biden's son Hunter, evidently in a bid to incriminate Biden despite there being no evidence of any wrongdoing on Biden's part.
It was that very request that prompted the current impeachment.
