PGA Golfer Scott Piercy Apologizes for Anti-Gay Post About Buttigieg

READ TIME: 1 MIN.

PGA golf star Scott Piercy is apologizing for an anti-gay Instagram post about former Democratic 2020 presidential candidate Peter Buttigieg, TMZ reports.

Taking to his Instagram Stories Wednesday, the athlete shared a meme that features a photo of the openly gay former South Bend, Ind. mayor. The pic finds the controversial Pepe the Frog character at a news desk similar to CNN with a chyron that reads, "Peter pulls out early from behind," referencing Buttigieg's Sunday decision to suspend his 2020 presidential campaign. The logo says "QNN" and is in the red-and-white style of CNN but references QAnon, an ultra-right conspiracy theory website.

GolfChannel.com reports the PGA Tour said in a statement that they were not happy with the post and "are disappointed in the lack of judgment used."

Piercy apologized for the post in a statement to Golf Digest.

"Whenever I post my intent is NEVER to offend. I want to apologize if any of my recent story posts have been offensive. I will do better!" he said.

Though the post has been deleted, TMZ still has a photo of it on its site. Click here to check it out.

Buttigieg has not responded to Piercy's remarks.
