HBO has just released a trailer for its new series "Coastal Elites," which stars Bette Midler, Dan Levy, Issa Rae, Sarah Paulson, and Kaitlyn Dever.
As EDGE recently reported, the series by screenwriter Paul Rudnick ("In & Out") and director Jay Roach ("Austin Powers" film series) focuses on five different characters as they navigate life during the pandemic and shutdown.
Miriam Nessler (Midler) is a New York City public school teacher that ends up in police custody, while Mark Hesterman (Levy) is "a young actor in West Hollywood videoconferencing with his therapist at a moment of career and personal stress." Callie Josephson (Rae) is a philanthropist that works her way into the upper levels of government, while Clarissa Montgomery (Paulson) is a YouTubing meditation guru, and Wyoming nurse, Sharynn Tarrows (Dever), volunteers to help in a New York hospital at the height of the pandemic.
As Variety reports, the trailer features Rae's, Midler's, and Dever's characters as they recall their respective experiences with Ivanka Trump, a MAGA-capped man roaming New York City, and encountering someone with COVID-19 symptoms.
Rudnick recently explained to Variety:
"I didn't want the material to feel instantly dated, so I tried to be very careful about references," says Rudnick. "Things are so crazy that when you think about three months ago it feels like a lifetime and people are almost nostalgic for February. I wanted to reflect that sense of being overwhelmed by every possible event so it would feel emotionally valid at any point. I think it could be working as a time capsule of Americans' lives."
