Actor Sara Ramírez Cast in 'Sex and the City' Reboot as Show's First Nonbinary Character

Tony Award-winning singer and actor Sara Ramírez is joining the cast of the "Sex and the City" reboot "And Just Like That...," playing the show's first nonbinary character, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ramírez, who will have a regular role on the 10-episode HBO Max series, will play Che Diaz (they/them), "a nonbinary, queer stand-up comedian who hosts a podcast on which Carrie is regularly featured," THR writes, adding, "Che is a big presence with a big heart whose outrageous sense of humor and progressive, human overview of gender roles has made them and their podcast very popular."

"Everyone at 'And Just Like That...' is beyond thrilled that a dynamically talented actor such as Sara Ramírez has joined the 'Sex and the City family.' Sara is a one-of-a-kind talent, equally at home with comedy and drama – and we feel excited and inspired to create this new character for the show," exec producer Michael Patrick King said in a statement.

The latest casting announcement comes not long after it was reported that the reboot will be making strides to be more diverse both in front of the camera as well as in the writers' room. Additionally, Kim Cattrall won't be returning to the series to reprise her Samantha Jones character and it was recently reported that the show will fill out the social circle of its main characters – Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) – by adding six additional characters including three women of color.

Ramírez, who won a Tony for their role in "Spamalot!" and is perhaps best known for their roles on "Grey's Anatomy" and "Madame Secretary," came out as nonbinary last year.
