EDGE's New Music Friday, Aug. 6: Tinashe, The Weeknd, Gaga & Tony but No Kanye – Again
Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Welcome to EDGE's New Music Friday, our guide to the best singles and albums released every week! We break down new music from Tinashe, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, and more. Unfortunately, Kanye West's new album, "Donda," still hasn't hit streaming services yet despite an August 6 release date and another Apple Music live stream event for the LP.
Tinashe - "333"
Tinashe releases her fifth album "333" this week after sharing her excellent singles "Pasadena" and "Bouncin." The 16-track LP finds Tinashe collaborating with several artists, including Jeremih, Wax Motif, Kaytranada, Buddy and more.
The Weeknd - "Take My Breath"
Following his massively successful 2020 album "After Hours," the Weeknd is already returning with new music. He re-teams with producer extraordinaire Max Martin for his new song "Take My Breath," the lead single from his upcoming fifth album. Not veering too far off course from "After Hours," the glittery new song finds the Weeknd channeling Giorgio Moroder for a disco-inspired bop ready to soundtrack your late night summer drives.
[Editor's note: The Weeknd's music video for "Take My Breath" comes with an epilepsy warning. Please watch with caution.]
Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett - "I Get A Kick Out Of You"
Seven years after their duet album "Cheek to Cheek," Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett are teaming up again for another covers album. This time, the duo are covering Cole Porter songs for the album "Love For Sale" out in October. The first taste of that LP arrives today with "I Get A Kick Out Of You."
Victoria Monét - "Coastin'"
Singer/songwriter Victoria Monét is sharing her newest single, "Coastin'." The Grammy Award nominee and frequent Ariana Grande collaborator's new song is a smooth and joyful R&B jam, perfect for the last few sweltering days as the summer winds down.
SUNMI - "1/6"
K-pop star and former Wonder Girls member SUNMI releases her latest EP "1/6" this week, which comes with the single "You can't sit with us" – and who doesn't love a "Mean Girls" reference turned into a killer bop. The sugary song gets more addicting with each listen and opens up SUNMI's solid EP, including standouts "SUNNY" and "Narcissism."
Wet - "Larabar"
Brooklyn-based indie pop group Wet shares its second single of 2021. "Larabar" finds Kelly Zutrau and Co. running with the same sound, "On Your Side," a glitchy and ethereal pop song with distorted piano and vocals that swirl around odd and unexpected sound effects and twisted synths. Both tracks will appear on the band's upcoming album "Letter Blue," due on Oct 22.
