'Search Party' Stars Jeffery Self, Cole Escola Sign on to Queer HBO Max Comedy

"Jeffery & Cole Casserole" co-stars Jeffrey Self, who is openly gay, and Cole Escola, who is non-binary, will star in "Bunny & Clyde" on HBO Max, Deadline reported.

Deadline detailed that in the upcoming sitcom, Self plays "a broken gay thirtysomething in the midst of an unmedicated bipolar episode," while Escola plays "a non-binary, self-identifying cabaret star".

Sketching out the plot, Deadline added that the two characters "get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reinvent themselves and a second chance at happiness. But not until they first live in a dead man's house, assume new identities and convince an entire Palm Springs community that the guy is still alive while they sell off his estate."

Deadline recalled that the duo "initially worked together on the cult-favorite sketch comedy series Jeffery & Cole Casserole on cable network Logo in 2009-2010." Self has gone on to forge a parallel career as a novelist, with titles like the LGBTQ+-themed YA novel "Drag Teen," to his credit, as well as being an actor and comedian.

The new half-hour sitcom is the creation of Self, AV Club noted, recalling that the two co-stars had also shared the screen on another HBO Max show, "Search Party," in which Self portrayed "a reliably zany – yet oddly grounded – supporting player," while Cole, who came out as non-binary earlier this year and uses they/them pronouns, played one of the series' "increasingly unraveled millennials," with his character being "more unraveled than the rest of them."
