Lil Nas X's 'Montero' Baby Registry Raises Half a Million for Charity

Remember that baby registry Lil Nas X set up last September for his debut album, "Montero?" It's still going strong, and it's generated half a million dollars for charities, many of them dedicated to HIV-related services and LGBTQ+ causes.

Good Morning America recalled that the Grammy-winning out rapper "pretended to be pregnant and 'gave birth' to his debut studio album, 'Montero,'" asking fans to celebrate the new arrival by donating "to 16 important charities that assist underserved and vulnerable communities."

GMA clarified that "Most of the organizations are members of the Gilead COMPASS Initiative, a campaign from Gilead Sciences aimed at stopping the AIDS/HIV epidemic in the American South."

Citing the program, GMA stated that the baby registry for "Montero" has "generated nearly $500,000. The money will be distributed across various organizations."

"Gilead Sciences' Shanell L. McGoy said Lil Nas X's gift will have a direct impact on communities affected by HIV, which new data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention shows still disproportionately affect Black people," the New York Daily News reported.

The openly gay recording artist issued a press release on March 29 in which he offered his thanks "to everybody who donated to my baby registry and joined me in helping to transform all of these communities in the South," reports recounted.

"Together we are giving much-needed resources to those who need it most – especially those impacted by HIV – and also helping inspire the leaders who are constantly fighting for HIV education and awareness," Lil Nas X went on to say.

The charities benefited by the registry also "include The Cade Foundation, which assists families struggling with infertility," the Daily News added, "and The Bail Project, which aims to end mass incarceration and help pay bail for those in need."
