Awkward: GOP Pol Votes Against Same Sex Marriage Bill Days Before Gay Son's Wedding
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Politics may not be personal for Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson, the GOP House member from Pennsylvania's 15th congressional district. On Wednesday, Gawker reports, "Congressreintroduced a modified versionof the "Respect for Marriage Act" – a years-old bill that would repeal the 1996 'Defense of Marriage Act' and establish protections for both same-sex and interracial marriage at the federal level."
Surprisingly, the bill passed the House with 47 Republicans on board and is headed to the Senate. But Thompson was not among those voting in the affirmative, which, Gawker points out, is curious because "one of Rep. Thompson's three children is openly gay and is in fact planning to marry their long-term partner this very weekend." (Gawker withheld their name as they are not a public figure and did not return the website's request for comment.)
"It's unclear whether Rep. Thompson plans to attend his own child's wedding after voting against legislation that would protect their right to have one," reports Gawker. "The ceremony's website claims the couple will be having a 'private rehearsal dinner with [their] families,' but does not specify which members. A spokesperson for Rep. Thompson did not immediately get back to us about the apparent hypocrisy of Rep. Thompson's vote. Either way, best of luck to the happy couple."
As far as the bill passing Congress, it may reach the 60-vote threshold it needs in the Senate if it finds the 10 GOP senators necessary for passage. The bill's sponsors are halfway there. According to CNN, 5 GOP senators are for it, 8 are against, 15 are undecided, and 22 did not respond to the network's request.
Axios writes: "Support among Republican senators is gradually building for a House-passed bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and codify federal recognition for marriage equality, with senators predicting it will eventually get the votes it needs to pass.
