According to David Beckham, Qatar is an "incredible" place, unless of course you're gay or a woman who wants agency over her life.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Beckman is fulfilling his reported $10 million-payday to help the Middle Eastern country become a tourist destination in a new video ad.
Beckman, on bike, speeds around the Gulf state's Doha capital and urges to viewers to "spend a few days" enjoying what the country has to offer. He sails; he visits a spice market and takes selfies with locals dressed in traditional clothing in the country.
"The modern and traditional fuse create something really special," says Beckham about Qatar in a voice over. "It's one of the best spice markets that I have ever been to. This will go down as one of my favourite mornings. This is perfection, I cannot wait to bring my children back."
Hopefully, none of his children turn out to be gay. It is still illegal to be gay in the country and women are unable to study, travel or marry without the consent of men. Still, the World Cup moving head in the country this fall.
"More than 6,500 migrant workers have died there while building the infrastructure for the tournament," the Guardian reported.
To no one's surprise, the promo video has sparked backlash on across social media for Beckham promoting "backward" Qatar. However, the former footballer has insisted that he would serve as a bridge to unite and change the country from within and "use football as a force for good." Tall order for the former sexiest man alive.
Even the gay mag Attitude even called him out, saying in an Instagram post: "David Beckham continues to keep his money just about as far as possible from where his mouth is when it comes to the LGBTQ community."
He appeared on the magazine's front cover in 2002. See Buckram's ad below.
