'Rain Dogs' Actor Jack Farthing Defends Straights Playing Gays

Actor Jack Farthing is making the case for actors to be actors. In an interview with the Times, Farthing said that he will "fight for all actors getting equal opportunities."

Wading into the highly debated topic, Farthing said that his fight for opportunities includes letting straight actors play gay characters if they are right for the role.

"I personally don't believe an actor's sexuality has to match exactly that of their character. Sexuality can be a broad spectrum," he said.

Farthing, 37, recently played wealthy gay man Selby in "Rain Dogs." He is reportedly dating writer Hanako Footman.

Meanwhile, much continues to be said about on the subject of straight actors playing gay characters.

In 2021 Russell T Davies, creator of "It's A Sin," said: "You wouldn't cast someone able-bodies and out them in a wheelchair."

However, "Tár" star Cate Blanchett emphasized the importance of "suspending disbelief" while acting.

Sir Ian McKellan had a similar stance, saying: "We're acting. We're pretending."
