With his new film "May December" premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend, out director Todd Haynes revealed in an interview with the French outlet Les Inrockuptibles that he's already planning his next movie, which will be a gay romance set in the '30s staring Joaquin Phoenix.

Speaking with the publication, Haynes said he wants to start the film early next year.

"It's a project that Joaquin Phoenix brought to me, and it's set in the 1930s. A love story between two men, based on an original, very audacious scenario. This is, I believe, his first gay role. I am very excited about this project!" the "Carol" filmmaker added.

Speaking with IndieWire, Haynes revealed the movie will likely earn a NC-17 rating.

"Joaquin was pushing me further and going, 'No, let's go further.' This will be an NC-17 film," the "Safe" filmmaker said.

Since winning the Oscar for Best Actor for his titular role in "Joker," Phoenix has gone on to star in the Make Mills drama "C'mon C'mon" and, most recently, Ari Aster's dizzying "Beau Is Afraid."

Haynes' "May December" stars Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore and earned positive reviews from critics at Cannes. IMDb describes the film's plot as follows: "Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under the pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past."
