Watch: Tom Holland Calls his 'Lip Sync Battle' Dressed in Drag a 'Proud' Moment

"Spider-Man" star Tom Holland singled out his lip sync battle, where he dressed in drag as Rihanna, as a performance that "left a lasting impact" and still makes him proud, People magazine reported.

"For the routine, he donned fishnets for a now-iconic rendition of 'Singin' in the Rain' and Rihanna's 'Umbrella,'" the outlet wrote.

The memorable moment took place on "Lip Sync Battle" in 2017 – a time at which the actor, then only 21, had been part of the Marvel Cinematic universe for only a year, playing the latest big-screen version of everyone's favorite wall crawler.

Holland opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about his "Lip Sync Battle" appearance in an interview that was mostly about his new Apple TV+ series, "The Crowded Room."

As THR describes the performance, Holland "kicks off his routine in a black suit and fedora, mimicking Gene Kelly's performance of 'Singin' in the Rain.' Then something remarkable happens: The drum loop to Rihanna's 'Umbrella' kicks in, and Holland emerges in a black bustier, vinyl hot pants, diamond-pattern fishnets and a black bob wig.

"He then embarks on a two-minute dance routine – difficulty level: 10 – that incorporates erotic thrusts over a black umbrella and an acrobatic forward flip into a puddle of water" – a feat of physical prowess that the talented athlete, who has received years of dance training, pulled off with apparent ease.

THR noted that years later, a viral tweet "asked fans to respond with their favorite Holland performance. The runaway winner – more than any of his Spider-Man films – was his May 7, 2017, appearance on 'Lip Sync Battle.' "

Given Holland's newly-minted status as a member of the MCU superhero status, "it probably came to a shock to some fans to see him give such an impressive performance – dressed in fishnet stockings, no less," BuzzFeed noted.

When THR asked whether the costuming choice was a "statement about toxic masculinity," BuzzFeed detailed, Holland "set the record straight," saying, "I didn't realize what I was doing was so forward-thinking. I was just like, 'Yeah, fuck it, I'll put some fishnets on and dance in the rain. That'll be really fun. I don't care.' "

But don't expect a repeat performance. Holland told the magazine, "you'd never catch me doing that now. Just because I don't want to do a fucking TV show that I don't need to do. I'd rather go and play golf and live my little private life."

Still, that outlier of a performance exerts a peculiar pull. "I've really worked hard in my career and I've really been calculated in deciding what it is I do and when I do it," Holland mulled. "And for all the movies that I'm incredibly proud of, the 'Lip Sync Battle' is what I get the most compliments for."

Much of the interview focused on Holland's new Apple TV+ project, which has drawn less than stellar reviews. Viewers may want to tune in all the same: The series includes "several athletic sex scenes, including one with another man in a cramped bathroom stall," THR noted.

Addressing the depiction of gay sex, Holland said, "I think it is a first," though, he added, playing the scene was "not a milestone" to him.

"It's not something that I'm like, 'Oh, wow. I got to play my first character with a different sexual preference than I have.' It's obviously a little more complicated than that," Holland told the entertainment outlet. "It felt very important to tell the story authentically."
