How 'Padam Padam' Became Kylie Minogue's Gay Renaissance

Emell Adolphus READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Kylie Minogue is no stranger to contagious pop tunes. Her previous generation-defying hits "Come Into My World" and "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" prove that.

But event Minogue seemed surprised by the monumental success of her recent "Padam Padam," reported GQ UK.

After some earlier versions of the song leaked, it took some time before Minogue's gay fan base began to sink their teeth into the tune and turned it into the success that it has become today.

"Despite the hype, 'Padam Padam' was not a guaranteed success," GQ reports. "Even though Kylie went out of her way to perform it on 'American Idol,' which felt like a big swing, at launch it only broke the top 30."

But the song found its fan base.

"Now we are well and truly in what some have referred to as the padam-ic: a hype train for a song by a 55-year-old pop legend, largely powered by 35-year-old gay men, which has now become Kylie's 46th top 20 hit," GQ reports. "Turn to TikTok and there are full recreations of the video, and people are using 'padam' as a catch-all gay communique."

About the song's success, Kylie posted a video to her Instagram responding to the song's success with a trophy celebrating the song being No. 1 on the UK Top 40: "What an incredible – another – wild turn in my life and career. Thank you so much for all your love and support, everyone who has got onto Padam Padam and made this possible for me."

Then she broke out into a little happy dance that was almost as viral as the "Padam" itself.

As GQ writes, "'Padam Padam' could only have so much clout if it was funny – it also had to bang. And bang it does.:

The song has made Minogue the toast of the town because its universal appeal, combining all the things we love about Kylie with cuteness and camp.

What's next? A twenty-second snippet of another track from her forthcoming album "Intense" is reportedly making the rounds and according to one tweeter, Minogue seems to be "trying to find the exact combination of both beeps and boops to make gay people die immediately."

It is a Minogue summer, and we are fully along for the ride. Revisit the "Padam Padam" music video below.
