Watch: Gay Military Drama 'Eismayer' Headed to Theaters Oct. 6

Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.

"Eismayer," a film from Austria about a tough-as-nails – and closeted – Army sergeant falling for an out recruit, is headed to American screens next month courtesy of Dark Star Pictures.

"Based on a true story, 'Eismayer' follows Sergeant Major Charles Eismayer (Gerhard Liebmann) a closeted gay man serving as a brutal drill sergeant in the Austrian Army, a terrifying figure for new recruits," The Indiependent details.

"But then one of the recruits, an openly gay soldier called Mario Falak (Luka Dimic) enters his life, and a secret passionate romance blossoms."

Based on a true story, the drama find Sgt. Eismayer struggling between the dictates of duty – he's married and a father – and a yearning to be free of the deceit he's been perpetrating.

"Arguably, toxic perceptions such as: machoism and the perceived extreme masculinity of an average male soldier could leave limited room for a closeted LGBTQ+ person to thrive within the army," The Indiependent notes. "This is exactly what this new Austrian drama: 'Eismayer' deconstructs throughout its poignant narrative."

The film comes in the wake of other recent acclaimed gay dramas with military settings, such as the 2021 film "Firebird" (a cold war-set drama about closeted officers finding love in the Soviet military, also based on a true story), the 2019 drama "Moffie," (which follows a gay South African teenager into his military service in the 1980s) and last year's "The Inspection," based on writer/director Elegance Bratton's personal experiences as a gay Marine.

"Director and writer David Wagner got to know about Eismayer's story after coming across an article about him in an Austrian newspaper back in 2014," The Geekiary reports. "The story captivated Wagner, who was studying directing at the Hamburg Media School. Wagner turned the story into a screenplay for a feature film as part of his course, and now the world can experience said film soon enough."
