Balenciaga's New $925 Towel Skirt, Plus Some of Their Ugliest Past Designs

Christopher Ehlers READ TIME: 9 MIN.

And who said fashion was dead?

A year after being in the doghouse for releasing an advertising campaign that some felt was glorifying child pornography, Balenciaga is back in the headlines after releasing another absurd piece, all in the name of fashion. The infraction this time? A god damned towel skirt for nearly $1000.

As New York Magazine's The Cut recently pointed out, this is not a fine garment crafted from the rarest of silk, it doesn't boast a soft and luxurious chinchilla lining, or even solid gold buttons. It's literally a terry-cotton skirt that doesn't even have as much of a logo on it.

The Cut asks an important question: is Balenciaga trolling us? Is this some kind of high-stakes, corporate fashion social experiment? Is it a game to see who among us not named Kanye West might drop $1000 for a towel skirt? After all, this isn't Balenciaga's first (or even second time) releasing such nonsense.

Here's a look at some of Balenciaga's most absurd releases:

Balenciaga Crocs Heel

Balenciaga Crocs Heel

Did you ever look at a pair of Crocs and think: "damn, I just wish these had a stiletto heel?" Well, for a few hundred dollars on the secondary market, a pair of these Grinch green monstrosities can be yours.

Balenciaga Toolbox Bag

The perfect purse for the men out there who don't want to be seen carrying a bag, this $1,150 bag goes great with a hard hat and some dirt smudged on your face.

Balenciaga Sweatpants/Denim

Because jeans on their own are soooooo passé, now you can invest in some shredded denim that reveals bright red sweatpants underneath. And at a mere $2000, how can you go wrong?

There are actually no words worthy of this disaster.

If you've ever wanted to look like the bird woman from "Home Alone 2," Balenciaga's got you covered for a paltry $8,000.

Balenciaga Trash Bag

Oh yes, this is exactly what you think it is: a $2,000 bag made to look like something you put waste into and leave on the side of the road. The downfall if civilization is imminent.

Balenciaga Destroyed Shoes

Balenciaga Destroyed Shoes

Available for a reasonable $3,000 on the secondary market, these Converse look-alikes (with "Balenciaga" sloppily scrawled in Sharpie on the sides) have been completely destroyed, which we suppose is a good thing since you don't have to worry about putting in any effort to take care of them. If you ever want to look like you've just escaped from a burning building, Balenciaga has got your back.
