Gay Twitter Finds Spotify's LGBTQ+ 'Sound Towns' Hilarious

Spotify's "Wrapped" feature tells listeners what city their musical tastes align with, but, NBC News reports, for LGBTQ+ users the pairings boiled down to three main results: Cambridge, MA; Berkeley, CA; and Burlington, VT.

"Those who matched with the cities, which some online pointed out are all college towns, said artists represented in Burlington, Berkeley and Cambridge indicated an LGBTQ listenership," NBC News noted. "They cited artists like boygenius, Charli XCX and Janelle Monáe."

The report added that "Officials in some of those cities expressed enthusiasm over the viral attention," and quoted Burlington City Arts Communications Director John Flanagan, who told the outlet, "We're delighted but not surprised that fans of artists who identify as queer align with Burlingtonians' collective values."

Added Flanagan: "Our community prides itself on inclusivity and is dedicated to cultivating and sustaining our vibrant and welcoming arts scene. We value listening to and experiencing great art and music just as much as we value creating it."

Sumbul Siddiqi, the mayor of Cambridge, quipped, "Who knows, maybe we'll incorporate some of these tracks into our next annual citywide dance party!"

Spotify spun the story its own way, NBC News relayed, with a spokesperson declaring, "The Sound Town selected for each eligible user has the most similar taste profile to their own – based on their most streamed artists of the year and how those artists are streamed in other cities across the globe."

"Just 0.6% of listeners got Burlington, 0.3% got Berkeley, and 0.1% got Cambridge as their sound towns, according to Spotify," NBC News relayed.

But X (formerly Twitter) users had their own takes, making humorous hay from the results, with many sharing they were in one or another of the top three cities while some others who landed elsewhere expressed puzzlement or even disappointment. Check out some of their comments.
