SAG Awards Fashions: The Good, The Bad, and The Boring

Nicholas Dussault READ TIME: 23 MIN.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are the next to the last event in Hollywood's seemingly endless award show season which culminates in the big dance, the Oscars, on March 10. By the time the SAG statues are handed out, there are almost no surprises. This year the only race that's still a race is between Emma Stone ("Poor Things") and Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon"). But people always tune in to see what the beautiful people are wearing on the red carpet.

In a nutshell, the carpet itself was sort of a dull blue grey while the majority of the glitterati whose high-priced heels walked across it wore black. But there were enough pops of color, interesting choices, and outfits that make you wonder what they were thinking to make yet another award show fun to watch. And like any good award show, there was the good, the bad, and the boring.

The Good Actresses

Ali Wong

The "Beef" actress made the best entrance of the night in a laser cut couture dress by Iris Van Herpen. It looked more like an art installation than a dress, but not since Cher has anybody commanded the carpet like Wong. Fortunately for those at her table, the tentacle-like structure was removable so she made her way to claim her trophy in a lovely dress that, sans tentacles, wouldn't have made her the talk of the carpet. Well played, Ali Wong.

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan looked the part of a glamorous movie star in a gold strapless Armani Prive couture gown. Simply styled to perfection, the only accessory that could have made her look like a bigger star would have been a trophy. Unfortunately, not this time (this was Mulligan's fourth nomination without a win). But, wow, she showed them all how it's done.

Brie Larson

Brie Larson's breakout role came with "Room" in 2016, which won her an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award. On this year's red carpet she brought color, skin, and casual California chic to the carpet in this pale apricot Atelier Versace gown. The midriff baring look was inspired by an outfit Claudia Schiffer wore in Vogue magazine in the mid-1990s. Be honest, if you had those abs you'd flaunt them too.

America Ferrera

If you're going to wear black, this is the way to do it. The simple Dior haute couture black belted gown with white off-the-shoulder cap sleeves made the actress feel like "princess fairytale Barbie." Beautiful!

Ciara

Ciara

Who but the one-time Princess of Crunk, actress, dancer, model, business woman, philanthropist, now SAG nominee, could storm the carpet in a chocolate latex keyhole gown? It fit like a glove which is no small achievement given that she gave birth in December. Perfectly styled in that badass sexy way few can carry off. But Ciara isn't like most people.

The Bad Actresses

Margot Robbie

It's painful to even say this, but one of the most beautiful, successful, powerful women in the world made the little black dress look awful. If only she hadn't worn the big pink attachment protruding from the waist up to the shoulder and down to a train behind her. Schiaparelli may call this look haute couture, but you've landed Margot Robbie on a worst-dressed list! That's not easy to do.

The busy creation that is half floor-length coat and half black dress with a whole lotta silly frilly spilling out of the dress into some sort of messy purple train. It looks like two separate projects Christian Siriano combined into one at the last minute. What would Nina Garcia have to say about the mess of a dress the one-time "Project Runway" winner created?

Is it chrome or silver metallic? Either way, this Puey Quinones creation is not flattering. The big ruffle sleeves made me want to sing "Silver Bells." There are so many ways to flatter the talented actress' new figure, but this isn't one of them. Billie Eilish's signature on her face only made it worse.

Speaking of which – Billie Eilish, Vivienne Westwood is not your friend. Enough said.

If you're not sure who she is, you are not alone. That being said, this Alexander McQueen frock looked like it got into it with a paper shredder. Apparently, it's vintage. Time has not been kind to this old dress. Nice shoes though.

When I first saw this multi-colored fringe mess, I thought the color on my television had gone awry. But everything from the orange bodice to the primary color-induced sensory overload of the fringe was supposed to be there. Looks like the world of fashion may have found its new Calamity Jane.
