More Than Just Sports: LGBTQ+ Athletes Are Pushing for More Visibility and Shattering Perceptions

READ TIME: 3 MIN.

Sports personalities earn much respect and admiration from those of us who lack the athletic ability to perform the same feats they do. In idolizing these record-breakers, we may have neglected a big part of their being: their sexual orientation. Stars like Megan Rapinoe, a professional soccer player, two-time World Cup champion, and outspoken LGBTQ+ rights advocate, are among the names to come out and live openly, making a mark both on and off the field.

She didn't just make headlines in sports history: she ignited a movement. The soccer star is among those championing for greater acceptance of athletes regardless of their identities. Rapinoe's story paved the way for many coming out to embrace their identities, challenge stereotypes of old, and promote inclusivity. The visibility wave has rippled over to the broader cultural landscape, fueling a much-needed conversation about representation (and acceptance) in all areas of life, including pop culture and entertainment.

LGBTQ+ Representation Goes Beyond the Turf

LGBTQ+ visibility has been growing, going beyond the field and making a splash in entertainment (including pop music and films). Movies and TV shows are part of mass media that have taken the initiative to tell stories that share a worldview from the LGBTQ+ perspective. Shows like Will and Grace, Killing Eve, Broad City, and Challengers, starring Zendaya, are hearty releases from Hollywood representing LGBTQ+ matters.

Even game studios are doing more to make gaming worlds more inclusive. Video games like Tell Me Why have brought gay characters to the forefront of gaming. Online slots like Fluffy Favorites are among those offering a colorful escape with fun gameplay and an inclusive line of adorable animal characters. Lighthearted themed games like these are showing that inclusivity is becoming an important factor even on the virtual front.

Breaking Into a New Age of Inclusion One Game at a Time

Athletes who identify as LGBTQ+ have long had to keep their true identities a secret. Coming out often spelled career suicide as discrimination, loss of sponsorships, and rejection forced athletes out of their sporting careers. Even so, there have been pioneers of the movement for inclusion in sports since the 1980s, when the diver Greg Louganis and tennis player Billie Jean King came out.

In today's world, athletes coming out as gay has stopped being the unspoken topic it was before. Supportive fans are coming out to encourage such athletes for the barriers they are breaking. The support players enjoy from the fans during such announcements goes to show just how much public perception is shifting for the better. One of the biggest changes that have come from the acceptance of LGBTQ+ players is on-field reactions. Players are getting more acceptance from their teammates and coaches than they would years back. It is encouraging more and more LGBTQ+ athletes hiding in the shadows to come out.

Inclusion is an Ongoing Fight

Discrimination against LGBTQ+ athletes is nothing new. The stories we hear now of sports personalities choosing to live their truth and put it out there have come after strenuous legal battles that have set a precedent for better treatment of LGBTQ+ athletes. Megan Rapinoe stands as one of the courageous voices to combat historical discrimination against LGBTQ+ athletes of all respects, which goes on even today. With more athletes flying the LGBTQ+ flag at this year's Olympic Games than ever before, proponents of the movement will feel proud of the progress made, even though more work is needed.

Challenges Remain, But Hope Prevails

While the challenges remain, athletes like Rapinoe are challenging stereotypes, fighting for inclusion, and demanding equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community - a turning point in what we can only hope garners more traction in sports' future. The movement is not limited to the field: we're seeing this call extend to the silver screen and beyond (even in games). These little wins are gradually shaping the narrative, inspiring change, and molding a future where everyone can live as their true selves.
