Which NFL Team Has the Gayest Logo? Or Why is Pat Patriot Bent Over?
READ TIME: 4 MIN.
The Houston Oilers moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1997 and took the regional name of the Tennessee Titans. Their logo looks like an asteroid crashing to Earth with a large 'T' in a circle and flames coming out of its top left side. They are also amongst the 11 NFL teams that do not participate in Pride Month. The others are The Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons. These are teams from states who went for Trump in the recent election.
For their part, the NFL actively supports Pride and have a logo to prove it. When they announced the logo, they wrote: "We're committed to continuing efforts around diversity, equity and inclusion because football is for everyone. We proudly support the LGBTQ+ community and The Trevor Project: TheTrevorProject.org/donate." But missing from the graphic used to announce the logo are those of the teams not participating.
But which team did Outsports pick to take the gold? That honor goes to Bucco Bruce, whose name does suggest that someone on the design team of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was in on the gay vibe by calling him Bruce, a first name long associated with gay culture. He was seen on the team's uniforms and merchandise from the years 1976 to 1997. Bruce wears a poofy hat with adorned with a large plume. He may have a knife between his teeth, but his neatly trimmed mustache and large hoop earring makes him look like he was a regular at Castro Street bars in the late 1970s. Or perhaps he was a Village People-wannabe dressed as a Pirate, but was turned down for being too gay and took this gig instead. Plus he's winking. "Hands down the gayest logo in NFL – and maybe pro sports – history. A classic and he is badly missed," writes OutSports, who also tie the logos together by bringing them up to date with current queer history.
"Since everything retro becomes cool again, we need to permanently bring back Pat and Bruce. To really update tradition, they will get married and Roughneck can be the best man."
But perhaps this conversation is moot since these choices all exist in the past and are only revived occasionally. Today's set of NFL logos are bland, stylized representation of the individual teams that throw off no gay vibes at all
