Commonwealth Shakespeare Brings Scrooge to Boston for the Holidays
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC), a non-profit theater organization dedicated to artistic excellence, accessibility, and education – brings its dazzling new production of the timeless classic, "Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol," to Boston for the holiday season. Adapted by Steve Wargo, and directed by CSC Artistic Director Steve Maler, the production will run at the Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston from December 8 through December 22, 2024.
Theatregoers will journey back to Victorian England to experience Charles Dickens' heart-warming story brought to life. With performances led by Will Lyman (voice of Frontline and "The Most Interesting Man in the World"; and CSC's "King Lear" and Prospero) as Ebenezer Scrooge, the production is infused with traditional carols in lush arrangements by Dianne Adams MacDowell ("A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder," "Starmites") and designed to bring joy to audiences of all ages.
The cast of Best-of-Boston actor/singers taking on multiple roles includes Norton Award winners Aimee Doherty, Kathy St. George, and Bobbie Steinbach, as well as Neal Ferreira, Damon Singletary, Robert St. Lawrence, Jared Troilo, and Fred C. VanNess, among others.
Rounding out this award-winning team of artists are former Boston Ballet Principal Dancer John Lam (Choreographer), Tony-nominee Scott Bradley (Scenic Design), Fabian Fidel Aguilar (Costume Design), Aja M. Jackson (Lighting Design), Elliot Norton Award-winner David Remedios (Sound Design), and Sarabeth Spector (Properties Design).
"Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' – the iconic story about the urgency of empathy and love for others – is the perfect celebration of the holidays," shares Maler. "We're thrilled to be creating another Boston theater tradition that brings together people from all walks of life to revel in a great story, told by some of CSC's most extraordinary artists and artisans."
CSC's two-week run of this eternally popular holiday production, in the beautifully restored Emerson Cutler Majestic theater, is among its most ambitious undertakings since the 1996 launch of Free Shakespeare on the Common. With a notable creative team, including CSC's Founding Artistic Director Steven Maler as Director and music direction by Elliot Norton Award-winner Dan Rodriguez, CSC pulls out all the stops to bring Scrooge's transformative night to the stage as a new holiday tradition.
