Smallville: The Complete Seventh Season

Blake Matthews READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Continuing the adventures of Superman before he became Superman, Smallville has reached its seventh season. This season introduced Superman's cousin Kara-El aka Supergirl, brought back superhero Green Arrow and his new girlfriend, the sonic powered Black Canary as well as the threat from returning villain Brainiac (James Marsters). In addition to all of that there's Lex Luthor's discovery of his father's secret society who possess the means to control Clark.

Some shows start to overstay their welcome after seven seasons, but "Smallville" keeps itself fresh by adding in new pieces of the Superman mythos each year , not only directly adapting parts of the mythos, but putting their own unique spin on it as well. This season not only saw the death of a major Smallville character, but actors Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) and Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang) decided not to renew their contracts. That along with series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar leaving the show could make a viewer nervous. But with the team they've got in place to run the show along with the plans to have Lex and Lana appear in a few episodes combined with the new characters they've announced; the show shouldn't suffer for it even though Lex and Lana will be missed.

Smallville: The Complete Seventh Season contains a good amount of extras including:

Audio commentary for "Persona" with John Glover, Ken Horton, and Todd Slavkin and "Siren" with Justin Hartley, Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, Kelly Souders, and Brian Peterson. Both commentaries combine fun banter along with interesting tidbits from the commentators involved.

There are deleted scenes for a number of the episodes some of which should have been kept in the actual episodes.

"Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton" gives the history of the character Supergirl and has interviews with people involved writing the character for both the show and the comic, and shows how Kara has evolved from her 1st appearance in 1959 to today.

"Jimmy on Jimmy" this was a roundtable discussion of the four actors to portray the character. From the 1st TV show to the 1970's movies, to the 2006 film and Smallivllie. This went over their different takes on the character and how they got their parts.

"Smallville Legends: Kara and the Chronicles of Krypton" is a flash cartoon depicting some of what happened on Krypton prior to Kara's arrival on Earth. This was similar to Oliver Queen Chronicles from the season six DVD release.

And the final extra is Smallville: Visions Digital Comic Book this is a digital comic book that you can play using the DVD drive on your computer to "read" a "Smallville" adventure.

"Smallville: The Complete Seventh Season" is a worthy addition to the Superman mythos and season eight should be interesting to see what direction the show goes in.
