Actor and director Greta Gerwig has found the follow up to her Oscar nominated "Little Women" adaptation. Variety reports she will direct a film about the iconic doll Barbie starring "I, Tonya" star Margot Robbie.

The "Lady Bird" filmmaker was connected with the Warner Bros. film in 2019 and signed a deal to write "Barbie" with filmmaker and partner Noah Baumbach. Robbie revealed that Gerwig is helming the project in her interview for British Vogue's Aug. 2021 issue and Variety confirmed the news.

When discussing the project, Robbie said Barbie "comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections."

"But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it," she added. "People generally hear 'Barbie' and think, 'I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't...'"

Production on the film is expected to begin in early 2022 with a 2023 release as Gerwig and Baumbach are currently working on his film "White Noise," which will star Gerwig.
