Watch: NFL's Carl Nassib Says He Came Out 'For the Kids'

When NFL free agent Carl Nassib came out last year, then with the Las Vegas Raiders, it was a momentous occasion for LGBTQ+ representation in football --- during Pride Month no less. But in a new insightful interview with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Michael Strahan, Nassib shares that he agonized over the decision.

As reported by ESPN, Nassib says he ultimately chose to come out "for the kids."

"I just wanted to show that it really doesn't matter -- your sexual orientation," Nassib told Strahan. "The last thing I said was like, 'You know what -- for the kids.' And pressed post."

The post Nassib is referring to is his Instagram, where he posted a video announcing that he was gay.

Nassib was a third-round draft pick by the Browns in 2016, and then became the first openly gay active player in the NFL. But despite nervous about public reaction, Nassib says was not worried about the reaction from his teammates, saying his announcement was met "with the most incredible support."

The message Nassib said he wants to send to kids struggling is that "they have support from a massive community of people."

Earlier this year, the Raiders donated $100,000 to The Trevor Project and Nassib matched the donation.

"We are making strides in a positive direction," said Nassib. "It won't be a perfect road, and we just have to continue the course and make sure that we do it from a place of love and not from a place of animosity."

He added, "That's the society I hope for one day," he said. "And I hope I can be a positive push in that direction."
