Fans Post Support for 'Heartstopper' Star 'Forced' to Come Out

Kit Connor, who plays rugby player Nick on Netflix's gay teen dramedy "Heartstopper," made a brief return to Twitter to announce that he is bisexual – and to chide those who "forced" him to come out.

Connor, who had announced he was quitting Twitter in September, posted a new message to the platform on Oct 31: "back for a minute. i'm bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself."

Connor added: "i think some of you missed the point of the show. bye"

"While Connor did not say exactly why he felt forced to come out, his post came weeks after he said he was 'deleting Twitter' amid accusations of queerbaiting, or benefiting from appearing as queer without claiming the community explicitly," NBC News reported. "That followed the emergence of photos showing him holding hands with Maia Reficco, his co-star in 'A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow.'"

The English actor had "previously spoken about social media users 'pressuring us to come out when maybe we're not ready,'" the BBC relayed.

The BBC also recalled that "The star, who has also appeared in Elton John biopic 'Rocketman' and the TV adaptation of 'His Dark Materials,' tweeted in May: 'Twitter is so funny man. Apparently some people on here know my sexuality better than I do...'"

Castmates, fans, and the creator of the web comic the series is based on all flocked to show their support.

Openly gay co-star Joe Locke, who plays Nick's love interest, Charlie, on the series, posted, "You owe nothing to anyone. I'm so proud of you my friend."

Another cast member, Kizzy Edgell, who plays Darcy, posted, "I love u kit im sorry this has been so disgustingly rough on you."

Castmate Sebastian Croft, who plays Ben, tweeted, "Kit Connor, the world doesn't deserve you."

"Love you my friend ❤️," Croft added.

Alice Oseman, who created the web coming and graphic novels that the show is drawn from, chimed in with: "I truly don't understand how people can watch 'Heartstopper' and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes."

Added Oseman: "I hope all those people are embarrassed as FUCK. Kit you are amazing."

The outpouring of support from fans greeted not only Connor's message, but the responses his castmates made.

Netflix swiftly renewed the series for two more seasons following Season One's instant success. Production on Season Two started in September, Variety noted.
