Smallville - The Complete Sixth Season

Robin Kavanagh READ TIME: 2 MIN.

For the last six years, audiences have followed the story of young Superman, pre-Metropolis, with the CW's (formerly WB's) Smallville has brought. Season 6 adds another layer to the mythology, introduces Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow) in his first live-action appearance and also shows the formation of the Justice League. Way cool.

Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season DVD set is truly super (pun intended), with over two hours of bonus footage, which include deleted scenes for more than half of the season's 22 episodes. Some scenes were redundant (which is obviously why they were cut), while others expanded the story, but were cut for time. These should've definitely been left in the final cut, so including them in the DVD set was a smart move.

Green Arrow: The History of The Emerald Archer, a documentary narrated by Mark Hamill, goes over the character's history beginning in the 40s, his animated appearances and the new storyline featured this season. The featurette also offers commentary from artists and writers who have worked on Green Arrow's various series. These include Kevin Smith, Judd Winick, Denny O'Neil, Neal Adams (who revitalized the characters' looks in the 70s) and various DC editors and historians. This is really a treat for any comic book fan, chocked full of colorful tidbits.

Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season also has The Oliver Queen Chronicles, a set of six episodes that ran about three minutes each and detailed how Oliver became Green Arrow. Originally these episodes were only available for cell phones, but now are available for all to enjoy. Also included is the Making of The Oliver Queen Chronicles, a behind-the-scenes look at how the episodes were created.

Smallville Content Wraps was a five-episode storyline told in animated comic form that ran about two minutes each. These episodes ran in between commercial breaks and were drawn by some of DC's top talent, including Dan Jurgens who was part of the Death of Superman storyline back in the 90s. It's cool to be able to watch all of these together and see how the story plays as it was meant to be.

Smallville: The Ultimate Fans is a featurette that showcases the show's super-fans. Some have Smallville viewing parties, others have named their kids after characters on the show. There are also from San Diego Comic-Con and the Smallville Q&A session, as well as a look at how the actors and writers/producers appreciate all their fans and their letter campaigns.

The only thing lacking from this set is commentaries; there wasn't a single episode that had one and commentaries have always been a part of the Smallville DVD sets. However, for fans of the series, comic books, Superman or Green Arrow, Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season is a must-have for your collection.
